Yesterday, Vicki, Roni and I took a step back in time — and it was marvellous.
The Classic Car Boot Sale in London, set against a backdrop of gleaming classic cars, offered more than just a browse through automotive history. It was a gathering of style, care, and passion — the very values we hold close at Farthings.
As we wandered among lovingly restored MGs, Jaguars, and Minis, another layer of craftsmanship stood out: the vintage fashion stalls. Each one was brimming with treasures, from original Prada blouses and Hermes silk scarves to beautiful Gucci shoes, all carefully curated and still full of life.
In a world often chasing the new, there was something profoundly reassuring about seeing so many people honour the old — and doing it with such pride.
If you appreciate beautiful clothing with a story to tell, this event was like a dream.
It was remarkable to see how well these pieces had aged. Designer jackets boasted robust stitching, vibrant silk scarves, and handbags that proudly displayed their subtle patina.
Names like Gucci, Burberry, Dior, Prada, and Yves Saint Laurent were sprinkled among the rails, not behind glass, but ready to be worn and loved again. This reinforced something we often talk about at Farthings: when garments are crafted and cared for properly, they become part of your personal history.
It was heartening, too, to chat with the sellers, many of whom shared how they restore and protect these vintage pieces before bringing them to market. This process is similar to the daily restoration and protection of cherished garments in our Cambridge and Trumpington branches.
The whole day carried a gentle energy — a reminder that slowing down to appreciate craftsmanship, whether it’s a finely tuned 1960s Triumph or a beautifully tailored Dior jacket, brings its own quiet joy.
Seeing how well these classic items had survived the years made us think about how clothes and accessories tell a story far beyond one season. They become memory holders, just as wedding dresses, heirloom suits, or favourite cashmere coats do for many of our clients.
