How to clean sequins and beaded garments without ruining them

Sparkly garments can be cleaned safely — but only with care. This guide walks you through how to protect delicate details like sequins and beads without causing damage, plus when it’s worth turning to a professional.

There’s something magical about a beaded or sequin-covered piece. Whether it’s a vintage top that’s been handed down, a dress for a special occasion, or a festival outfit that turns heads, these garments hold more than sparkle. They hold memories.

So when it is time to clean them, it’s only natural to feel cautious. A little too much enthusiasm with the wrong detergent, and that magic can quickly turn into missing beads or a patch of dull fabric.

Here’s how to avoid that — and care for these pieces in a way that keeps them wearable for years to come.

1. Start with the label, then use your judgment

Most garments will come with a care label that reads something like:

  • Dry clean only

  • Hand wash cold

  • Do not tumble dry

But here’s the thing: just because a label says “dry clean only” doesn’t mean that’s always the best route. Certain beads or sequins (especially vintage ones) can react poorly to common dry-cleaning solvents. If you’re ever unsure, do a gentle test: dampen a cotton bud with water or cleaning solution and dab a hidden bead. If it discolours — pause. It may be safer to spot clean or ask a specialist.

If the label suggests hand washing and the beads look well-secured, you can usually proceed gently.

2. Try spot cleaning first

If only one area needs attention (say, a makeup mark or a splash of red wine), your best bet is a spot clean.

** Mix a mild detergent with cold water.

** Use a cotton bud or soft cloth

** Dab gently — don’t rub

The stitching on sequins and beaded garments is often delicate. Rubbing can break threads, shift embellishments, or stretch the base fabric. Always test your solution on a hidden section first to check for colour bleed or damage.

3. Hand wash with patience (if safe to do so)

If the entire garment needs a refresh and the label doesn’t strictly forbid water, you can hand wash with care.

Here’s how:

  • Fill a clean basin with cold water and a small amount of gentle detergent

  • Turn the garment inside out

  • Submerge it and lightly agitate the water with your hands — no twisting or scrubbing

  • Let it soak for 5–10 minutes (not longer)

  • Rinse thoroughly with cold water.

You’re looking for a gentle cleanse — just enough to lift surface grime without disturbing any embellishments.

4. Dry flat. Never hang.

After rinsing, lay the garment flat on a clean towel and roll it gently to remove excess water. Then reshape it, still flat, on another dry towel.

Avoid hanging, even if it’s just to “air dry.” The weight of waterlogged beads can stretch fabric and distort the shape, especially in dresses or longer tops.

Let it air dry naturally, away from direct heat or sunlight.

5. What not to do

  • No washing machines – even delicate cycles are too rough for embellished garments

  • No dryers – heat can melt sequins or weaken glue and thread

  • No direct ironing – if you must press the garment, use a low-heat iron on the reverse, with a cloth in between — or better yet, use a handheld steamer from a distance

6. When to call a professional

Some garments are too precious, intricate, or fragile to risk at home. This includes:

  • Vintage pieces

  • Items with loose or elaborate beadwork

  • Sentimental garments (e.g. wedding outfits, heirlooms)

If you’re even slightly unsure, speak to a dry cleaner who specialises in delicate textiles. Let them know exactly what the garment means to you — they’ll usually be happy to advise or test a patch before proceeding.

Sequins and beads deserve care, but that doesn’t mean you need to be afraid to clean them. With the proper method (or a little expert help), you can keep your favourite sparkly pieces looking special for years to come.
