How to take care of silk and rayon

Silk and rayon are two standard fibre in most of our casual as well as high-end garments.

Both fibres take nice and vibrant colours and look great in apparels.

To keep these garments in tip-top condition, it is essential to care for these fibres in an appropriate way. Otherwise, these clothes can lose their original sheen and colour.

We should always clean them according to the care label instructions. These clothes are very prone to colour loss so, in case you spill some alcohol or any other drink, please try to get your garment cleaned as soon as possible otherwise it can discolourise the fabric.

Silk is an extremely delicate fabric and general household things like soap, shampoos, and detergents; even toothpaste can damage the colour of a silk garment.

As a thumb rule, we should never use bleach for silk or rayon clothes, which can potentially damage the garment permanently.

If a garment’s care label recommends handwashing, we should never go for dry cleaning, unless it is also acceptable. If it is a two-piece dress or has few parts, all of them should be cleaned at the same time to preserve uniformity.

Generally, shade drying is recommended for silk and rayon garments.

After cleaning, proper storage is equally important. Silk and rayon garments must be stored in a closet away from direct light.

Both natural light (sunlight) and artificial light can fade the colour of silk and rayon garments.
