How do you know if you have a moth problem, and what can you do about it? Let’s dive in.
Identifying a Moth Problem: Physical Signs of Moth Infestation
When a customer comes in, one of the first signs we look for is a white, almost cobweb-like substance on the garment. This is often an indication of moth activity. Additionally, small holes in the fabric are a clear sign that moths have been at work.
Moth Behavior and Preferences
It's not the adult moths that cause the damage but their larvae. Therefore, it's crucial to catch the flying moths before they lay eggs and their larvae start eating your clothes.
Larvea will only eat natural fibers like silk and wool. Sometimes, they might target mixed fibers if these contain some wool or silk. However, they generally do not eat synthetic materials like polyester.
Spotting the Moths
Moths are usually quite small and may appear shiny. Besides spotting the moths themselves, you might notice tiny, sand-like grains.
Treatments for Moth Infestations
If you suspect you have a moth problem, we recommend several products to help manage the issue:
Acana Moth Traps: These help catch flying moths.
Acana Wardrobe Hangers: These are designed to be hung among your clothes in the wardrobe to deter moths.
Moth Killer Sachets: Ideal for placing in drawers and pockets.
Sprays: We offer specific sprays for fabrics and carpets.
While we have our preferred brands, there are many effective options available on the market.
Natural Deterrents
Cedarwood balls are a natural deterrent. Moths dislike the smell of cedar, so placing cedarwood balls in your wardrobe can help keep them at bay. Remember to scratch the cedarwood occasionally to reactivate its scent.
Dry Cleaning and Moth Eggs
Can Dry Cleaning Kill Moth Eggs?
Yes, dry cleaning can effectively kill moths and their eggs. However, some garments may not be suitable for dry cleaning.
Alternative Methods
For garments labeled "do not dry clean" but can be washed, washing alone might not kill the eggs. In such cases, we recommend to wash and then freeze the garments for about two weeks. This method is effective, and you can do it at home if you have a freezer large enough. We also offer this service at our dry cleaners.
