Understanding the different types of curtain backings

When it comes to curtains, many people are unsure about the various backings and how they impact the functionality and cleaning process.

There are four main types of curtain backings to help you make informed decisions for your home.

1. Unlined Curtains

Unlined curtains are the simplest type, consisting of just a single piece of fabric. These curtains do not have any additional layers, making them lightweight and straightforward. While they are easy to handle and clean, they may not offer the best insulation or light control.

2. Lined Curtains

Lined curtains have an additional layer of cotton fabric sewn to the back of the main curtain fabric. This extra layer provides better insulation and enhances the drape of the curtain, giving it a more polished look. Lined curtains are ideal for those who want to improve energy efficiency and add a bit of elegance to their windows.

3. Interlined Curtains

Interlined curtains have an additional layer of fabric in between the lining and face fabric. They had 3 layers: main curtain fabric, a middle layer of tick blanket (fluffy fabric) insulating material, and a lining layer. This extra bulk offers superior insulation, making them perfect for keeping heat in during the winter and out during the summer. The interlining also adds to the fullness and luxurious feel of the curtains.

4. Blackout Curtains

Blackout curtains come in two main types:

  • Separate Blackout Lining: This type features a separate blackout lining that can be attached to the main curtain fabric. The blackout lining typically feels like velvet and has a silky texture. It is excellent for blocking out light, making it ideal for bedrooms and media rooms.

  • Integrated Blackout Lining: In this type, the blackout material is coated directly onto the back of the curtain fabric. This integration ensures that no light passes through, offering maximum darkness and privacy.
